6 Words Project

The task given for the "6 Words" project, was to take six words (given by another student) and to create a piece representing those six words, while also including the words within the piece. The six words I was given were Keep Calm and Play Ice Hockey. Here is the piece I created:
For this piece, I tryed to break away from the very restrictive guidelines the "Keep calm and ____" meme presents, so instead the style was derived primarily from my desire to allude to the "hockey player missing a tooth" cliché. To really draw focus to this element, I decided to go with the silhouette of a hockey player with everything besides the teeth being in stark contrast to the teeth themselves (by means of black/white opposition). From the teeth I also got this feeling of blockiness that I felt I could further in the design with my choice of text. The text also felt thematically in line, with hockey being an activity that would lean towards this genre of typography. With the text, I based the placement and coloring around me being able to highlight the text "I Play Hockey" (That's really the core of this message isn't it?). Now while this mught not have been appropriate in a employer-client relationship, with it being a little cynical in hindsight, I feel this is something I can get away with in a classroom environment. As far as color choice goes, I like the coolness that the dark blue and white presents, also the dark blue and white are the colors of our tampa bay lightning (felt like a win win). Lastly, I incorperated the the crown into it, because I felt I strayed too far from the original meme.

The gist of this piece comes from how I felt and acted as a child. I wasn't very individualistic and mainly focused on my studies. Now looking back, I see a lot of time squandered. Also I realize that calcu-roach is three syllables while cockroach is only two. But I always call them cock-a-roaches so really it's all just self indulgent to title the piece calcu-roach as opposed to calc-roach- but hey... its my piece.
