The Importance of Art

This blog post is in response to the anonymous quote:

"Tax dollars should not be wasted on art, music or theater classes in high school. Public high schools should be about training young people to enter the workforce. Period."

Wow. It's amazing just how much 29 words can ruin your day.

If maths and sciences form the skeleton of our world, then art is the brain that makes it all worth it. The arts have always been a way for students to better understand and appreciate both themselves and the world around them. Without the arts, we lose the crucial trait of self awareness that art classes develop, and at such a young age too. More to the point of the quote, the world is always in desperate need of good artists. Without artists we would all live in box homes, with flat lifeless bridges and the same dull grey cloaks. Architects, designers, and fashion designers are just a few of the jobs that require a knowledge of how to practically apply skills learned in art classes to real-world, physical creations. Artists breathe life into the world around them and give the world meaning. Without them, to many the world would be bland and empty. Rather than shut off the beauty in the world just to cut down on tax dollar spending, let's push for a larger art budget. To create a world worth living in.

Micrography

The gist of this piece comes from how I felt and acted as a child. I wasn't very individualistic and mainly focused on my studies. Now looking back, I see a lot of time squandered. Also I realize that calcu-roach is three syllables while cockroach is only two. But I always call them cock-a-roaches so really it's all just self indulgent to title the piece calcu-roach as opposed to calc-roach- but hey... its my piece.
